There's no fixed fare to Iceland. Smyril Line doesn't publish a price list; instead, each crossing is made up of several elements and priced by season and demand. What ends up on your ticket depends on the route, your travel date, your berth on board and your vehicle. The total for your crossing is worked out in the booking window, and the matching departures are in the timetable.
What makes up the price
| Element | What it depends on |
|---|---|
| Crossing per person | Route, travel date and how far ahead you book |
| Berth on board | Category, from a bunk in a couchette compartment to a suite |
| Vehicle | Length and height, standard size 1.90 m high and 5 m long |
| Surcharges | Caravans and oversized vehicles, cot, kennel for pets |
The operator's prices are in euros and include taxes and fees. Not included are meals on board, excursions, transfers and accommodation ashore, unless you book a package. For children up to eleven, the price depends on whether they take their own berth or an extra bed in their parents' cabin; anyone under 16 can only travel with a parent or guardian.
The route: through crossing or in stages
The Norröna sails a rotation calling at three ports, which gives you three bookable legs. The through crossing Hirtshals - Seyðisfjörður is the direct way to Iceland and the longest leg. If you're only heading to the Faroe Islands, book Hirtshals - Tórshavn, and from the islands you continue with Tórshavn - Seyðisfjörður. You can also use the stop in the Faroe Islands as a stay in its own right, rather than staying on board.
Vehicle and berth as separate items
On the vehicle deck, space is what counts. Smyril Line treats a standard vehicle as a car up to 1.90 m high and 5 m long; caravans and oversized vehicles are charged a surcharge. Measure up before you book and include roof box, bike rack and tow bar, since your space on deck is based on those measurements. For motorhomes, tall bodies and combinations, the details are in our guide Taking a Motorhome to Iceland.
The second big item is your berth. Given the length of the crossing, almost three days, Smyril Line specifically recommends a cabin, and since the vehicle deck stays locked for the whole crossing, sleeping in your own vehicle isn't an option anyway. Choices range from a bunk in a couchette compartment through inside and outside cabins to family cabins and suites; every category except the couchette compartments has a shower and toilet. If you're travelling with animals on the Faroe Islands leg, separate accommodation for the animal is charged on top - the rules for that are in our guide Taking a Dog to Iceland.
Payment, rebooking and cancellation
A deposit of 25% of the trip price is due at booking, with a minimum of €810. The balance is due no later than 30 days before you travel, without a further reminder. If you book fewer than 30 days before departure, the full trip price is due immediately; the same applies to bookings that fall below the minimum deposit amount.
| Cancellation before departure | Amount retained |
|---|---|
| more than 30 days | 10% |
| 30 to 15 days | 50% |
| 14 to 8 days | 75% |
| 7 to 0 days or no-show | 100% |
You can change your travel date right up until shortly before departure, but the cost varies depending on how much notice you give. It's charged per leg, plus a further fee if you also change your vehicle or cabin.
| Date change before departure | per leg | vehicle or cabin |
|---|---|---|
| more than 30 days | €27 | €27 |
| 30 to 15 days | €54 | €41 |
| 14 to 8 days | €108 | €54 |
| 7 to 0 days | €162 | €68 |
Where you can save
The single biggest lever is timing. Cabins and vehicle spaces are tightest from mid-June to the end of August; in spring and autumn the Norröna is quieter, and the operator regularly runs promotions for drivers and motorhome travellers in those months. The second lever is category: a bunk in a couchette compartment costs considerably less than an outside cabin, and a fully occupied cabin works out cheaper per head than the same cabin for two. The third lever is the vehicle itself - as soon as you go over the standard size, the price rises.
On board you pay in Danish kroner, and all major cards are accepted. You're welcome to bring your own food, just not to eat it in the restaurants, bars and other public areas, and personal luggage up to around 200 kilograms travels free. And the tip that saves the most money of all: every passenger must be checked in no later than one hour before departure. If you don't show up, nothing is refunded.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ - Prices for the Iceland Ferry
Frequently asked questions about prices and fares for the Iceland ferry - price components, vehicle, cabin and cancellation.
What determines the price of the Iceland ferry? +
On four things: the route (all the way to Iceland or just as far as the Faroe Islands), your travel date, your berth on board and your vehicle. Smyril Line doesn't publish a price list and calculates fares by season and demand. The booking window shows the price for your crossing, and the matching departures are in the timetable.
What does it cost to bring a car or motorhome? +
Your vehicle is priced separately, and its category is decided by length and height. The standard size is up to 1.90 metres high and 5 metres long; caravans and oversized vehicles carry a surcharge. Give the dimensions including roof box, bike rack and tow bar. Everything on dimensions and booking is in our guide Taking a Motorhome to Iceland.
Do I need a cabin, and how does it affect the price? +
In practice, yes. Given the length of the crossing, almost three days, Smyril Line specifically recommends a cabin, and the vehicle deck stays locked for the whole crossing. Category is the second-biggest factor after the route: from a bunk in a couchette compartment through inside and outside cabins to a suite. In high season, the cheaper categories sell out first.
When is the trip price due? +
A deposit of 25% of the trip price is due at booking, with the balance due no later than 30 days before departure. If you book fewer than 30 days before travel, the full amount is payable immediately; the same applies to smaller bookings below the minimum deposit amount. On board you pay in Danish kroner, and all major credit cards are accepted.
Can I rebook or cancel my ticket? +
Yes, both are tiered. On cancellation, Smyril Line keeps 10% more than 30 days before departure, half from 30 to 15 days before, three-quarters from 14 to 8 days before, and the full amount in the final week. Changing your date costs a fee per leg, which rises the closer you get to departure. The tiers are set out on this page.
